Who is the School Adjustment Counselor?
The School Adjustment Counselor (SAC) provides a variety of services to students in the Waltham Public Schools all with the intention of helping children reach their optimum potential. Today, many children come to school with social, personal or environmental problems that may interfere with their educational progress. Teachers, specialists and/or parents refer students to the SAC because of their concerns about social-emotional, behavioral or adjustment difficulties that are directly impacting children within the school environment.
The primary goal of the SAC is to help a student achieve social emotional and academic success. Essential to this process is the building of trusting relationships with students, families, teachers and other school personnel while maintaining confidentially. The extent of involvement can vary from one consultation, a few sessions, to ongoing services.
What kinds of services does the School Adjustment Counselor provide?
Provide counseling services, crisis intervention, case management, information and referral services
Conduct whole class lessons to improve social competency
Consult with teachers, administration and other support staff
Monitor student progress
Maintain collateral contact with community service providers
Attend parent teacher conferences as requested

In Waltham, the School based Therapists work to foster their students’ ability to access the curriculum, while continually making their services less necessary or less invasive. All of the therapists in consultation with teachers, parents and staff provide recommendations for strategies that may include; the use of modifications or accommodations to the environment and appropriate equipment or tools that aid or assist students in accessing the curriculum. All of the therapists provide education to the students and staff to promote independence and they monitor the effectiveness of all supports. This approach to service delivery promotes inclusion and results in students being in their classrooms learning with their peers.
